Belle Greenbaum passed away peacefully in Tucson on Oct. 23, 2003. She was with her children and her friend and caretaker of four years, Beth Navallez. Belle was 91.
Belle and her husband Arnold moved to Safford in the early 1940s from Chicago, Ill. She lived here until she moved to Tucson in 1994, a year after Arnold passed away. Over the 50 years that she lived in Safford, Belle was instrumental in reopening the old Safford public swimming pool where she taught swimming for many summers. She also helped move the Safford Public Library from the old Women's Club building to the Odd Fellows Home. In 1962 she went back to her first love, teaching. She taught English at Safford High School for 10 years before she retired. After retirement, she and Arnold attended Eastern Arizona College, taking classes in creative writing, photography and art. During the summers they traveled and spent many sessions at Elder Hostels all over the western United States. Belle was an avid golfer; she loved to play bridge and grew some of the Gila Valley's most prize-winning roses. Belle is survived by her two daughters, Jeannie Miller and Ilene Wignall; and her son, David. Belle has four grandchildren, Zane and Case Miller, Christopher Fisher and Emma Greenbaum. Belle was an artist, a poet, a photographer, a painter, a sculptor, a teacher and -- most of all -- a friend and a mother.
For those wishing to remember Belle, donations to the Belle and Arnold Scholarship Fund at Eastern Arizona College would be appreciated.
